For the fourth time within two months we went to a funeral.  This time we lost a dear friend to cancer.  She was only 42.  She left behind her husband and 4 children after a two year battle.  I am going to miss her smile, laugh, and unique way of expressing herself.  I can still see and hear her in my mind’s eye.  I know she is rejoicing with the Lord and experiencing a world we can only fathom.  We struggle so hard to stay on this earth but I know she would not want to come back.  I am so thankful we have a Blessed Hope.  We know this is not the end.  We will see our loved ones again in the presence of the Lord.  Our life here seems like forever but it is only a vapor, here for a little while and then gone.  Funerals remind me to live my life so that I get to see those ones I love once again.  There is nothing more important than knowing, loving, and obeying God and teaching my children to do the same.  It is our Blessed Hope.  It is my plain and simple hope that this will be the last “Blessed Hope” blog for a while.  I’m a little weary of funerals!

For me, the word pennywise always brings up a mental image of Benjamin Franklin and a printing press. It just seems to have a nostalgic ring to it. That’s why, when the opportunity came for us relocate to a historical landmark only five miles from our home, we jumped on it.

We started PennywiseLearning.com in 2002. Like a lot of home birthed businesses, it started in one part of the lower level and eventually had taken over most of the house. Which by the way is a great problem to have. By spring of 2008, we really had no choice but to look at our options.

Imagine a home with eight children and two adults. Fill the entire lower level with offices, shipping areas and many thousands of dollars worth of inventory. Then add in three or four employees, UPS, Fed EX, sales people, and a tractor trailer of two waiting to be unloaded.

Do you begin to get the idea of what it must have been like visiting the Pratt house? I remember people coming to visit and saying, “you really live like this?”, and we were like, “yeah. We wouldn’t have it any other way”.

But after one very hectic morning, Kristen and I had go out to run some errands and I remember saying, “I think it’s time”. To that she replied, “funny you should mention it, I saw this building I have always loved in town is for sale. Do you want to take a look?” So we did and within a day we made a ridiculously low offer knowing that if they said yes, it would only be the Lord. Of course, they accepted it on the spot.

The building was built in 1876. Built on the Erie Railroad it served as a dry goods store and the original post office in town. It even housed the town hall for a bit in the late 1800’s. It still has the original safe along with all of the receipts and paperwork from the 1800’s to the 1950’s.

This 7,000 square foot building is a treasure to us. There is enough room for inventory, offices, and even a warehouse outlet store. There’s even a loading dock where the horse drawn carts used to load and unload. To top it off we have the hitching post sill out in front of the huge front porch.

We love the fact that we have the opportunity to recycle and reuse this building as much as we love the history of it. Located less than five miles from our home, we could not have asked for a better location for PennywiseLearning.com

We spent the first two months gutting, cleaning, and remodeling the inside. After a lot of work, we moved in October of 2008. Of course there’s a long way to go finishing it off but we’re off to a great start. Best of all, now when I think of the word pennywise, I think of Ben Franklin, the printing press and of course, the Pennywise building.

PennywiseLearning.com''s Historical Building

This is an actual photo of the building in the early 1890’s given to us by the Town of Collins Historical Society. Notice the horse in the front and Rte. 39 is a dirt road.

PennywiseLearning.com's Historical Sketch

Our building was featured as one of WNY’s Historical buildings. This is a sketch that appeared in the book.

I am in the process of planning for our 2010/2011 school year.  I have to start early because of how many children we have and there is no time during the summer because we are so busy at Pennywise Learning.  I have to get all of the prep work done by the end of June.  During this process I’ve been challenged to find the right fit for my current 5 year old.  He will start first grade in the fall but he is my most advanced student.  He is already well beyond first grade math.  He has known how to read for a while now.  The trouble is his hand-eye coordination is on par with his grade level.  Because his brain works much faster than his hands, he gets frustrated with lots of handwriting.

PennywiseLearning.com Bob Jones HomeschoolWhile trying to find the best fit for him I took a fresh look at Bob Jones curriculum (BJU).  I have always liked BJU.  It is colorful but not distractingly colorful.  It has lots of manipulatives and teaching ideas.  It is textbook based but has the benefits of lots of hands-on activities.  It is challenging but not overwhelming.  It is a great all around curriculum.  I think I have settled on moving my little guy into mostly BJU.  We have already started some of it and he is really enjoying it.  While he does have to write out his answers, BJU is not as writing intensive as the curriculum we had been using.  We will drop handwriting for now and continue to use the Kumon workbooks for extra handwriting practice.

One question we get asked frequently is if you really need the Teacher Editions for BJU, especially in the younger grades.  I thought I’d simplify life by skipping it with Math.  My little guy is already very advanced in math.  He catches on quick to new concepts.  I really didn’t think I would need the Teacher Edition since the math is still easy enough to grade.  I ended up ordering the Teacher Edition because we missed the cute little stories that go along with course.  The manipulatives include making 2 little puppets to be used with the story.  Even though my student could learn all the math without the Teacher Edition, it is a lot more fun with the extras.  I will invest in the Teacher Editions for now on!  I will hold onto them to use them with my younger boys, making it cost effective.  I will only need to replace the consumable worktexts and tests the next time around.

I am so glad I took a closer look at BJU after not using it for awhile.  It really is a nice curriculum and will serve us well in the coming year.

I love this simple statement because it is so true, especially when it comes to our children and Homeschooling.

For example, if I tolerate having our school room in a perpetual state of trashiness, then I have taught my children that it is okay have a trashed school room. I can pretty much count on the fact that my kids will leave it trashed. Whereas if I do not tolerate it and I require of them what I can tolerate (a clean school room), then I am teaching them to keep the school room clean.

This week, we’re giving away a Homeschool in the Wood’s (publisher) Record of Time – Timeline Notebook. Retail Value: $37.95

Timelines are a wonderful way to see all of history at a glance! They help visualize the procession of time and how one event spurs on another. They also help you see history by the slice – what was happening at various places in the world at the same time. Timelines help the most visual of learners grasp the abstract idea of “time” in a hands-on way.

Heres what the Record of Time-Timeline includes:

- A 12 x 9 HARD-COVER binding to take the shelf wear and years of use, wrapped around a spiral binding allowing the timeline to lay flat!

- One-hundred and twenty-two durable, ivory colored, cardstock pages, 11 x 8.5 (horizontal), dated from 5000 BC to 2025 AD. Each page contains faint background lines to keep written notations neat as well as notable, inspiring quotes pertaining to the time period!

- An additional 17 pages of maps, both ancient and modern world, to add interest in your childs studies!

- A signature page to personalize the Record Book with your childs name and date!

With all the time and energy your child puts into their timeline notebook, you will want one that not only beautifully displays their efforts, but will stand up to the years of use, providing a keepsake to last their school-life and beyond.

Every family needs deadlines to motivate them once in a while.  Our deadline was today at 10 am.  We had an appraiser come to evaluate our home for a mortgage refinance.  We wanted to put our best face on so we worked hard to clean every surface and do all those little repairs we had procrastinated.   I can’t remember when all of my children had their bedroom clean all at the same time.  When we just had 3 or 4 children I could manage to get the entire house clean all at once.  I’ve since lost that battle and have to settle for most of it clean at once.  We won’t have another deadline like this until next June when my 2nd oldest graduates high school and we have his party,  so today I am going to sit back and enjoy the clean.

Create and Prioritize a Task List

One day, Ivy Lee a management consultant called on Charles M. Schwab of the Bethlehem Steel Company. In that meeting, Lee gave Schwab an idea to make his company more efficient and told him to try it for one month and when the month was over, Schwab was to send Lee a check for whatever he felt the idea was worth. Schwab had the know-how, he just needed more time in a day to get it all done.

At the end of the month, Ivy Lee received a check for $25,000, an enormous amount of money in the early 1900s. Charles Schwab said that it was the best idea he ever received. The idea:

1. Write down on a sheet of paper the six most important things you need to do tomorrow.

2. Prioritize the list and order them from most important to least important.

3. First thing tomorrow, look at the first item on the list and work on it until it is completed.

4. When the first item is finished, then move onto the second item and work on that item until it is completed, and so on.

5. At the end of the day, make another list for the next day, and do the same.

Don’t worry if you only finish two or three tasks in a day. You are finishing the most important tasks and not getting distracted by the insignificant ones. By doing this simple prioritization of your tasks, even if only mentally, you will be amazed at how much more you can get done.
